When RuPaul’s Drag Race UK announced it would be returning with a third season in the same calendar year as Season 2 aired, it initially made sense. Season 2 had become an international phenomenon, so why not strike when the iron is hot? Unfortunately, it turns out the iron was overheated, resulting in a messy, convoluted Drag Race UK Season 3 that drew largely negative reviews. Though it wasn’t a terrible season by any measure, and featured some real standout performers — Choriza May, River Medway, and Kitty Scott-Claus were my personal favorites — it just lacked so much in comparison to what had come before. Additionally, the number of atypical elimination formats threw the rhythm of the season off, and kept some inevitable eliminations from happening for weeks. In the end, Ru’s personal favorite, Krystal Versace, triumphed over the queen with the best track record, Ella Vaday, clarifying that UK plays by very different rules when it comes to crowning a winner.
