Amid a disappointing slew of American seasons, great Drag Race surprised us by popping up across the pond. RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 1, hosted and judged by Ru and Michelle Visage, mixed British flavor (the jokes, the challenges, judges Alan Carr and Graham Norton) with what already worked about the existing format. It helped that a game, fun cast, featuring stand-out performers like Blu Hydrangea, Cheryl Hole, and Crystal, dove into the proceedings with such charm and spirit. Our eventual final three featured a quirky underdog (Divina de Campo) going up against two best friends (The Vivienne and Baga Chipz), and one of the friends won out. The clamor for a new UK season began immediately, but thanks to COVID-19, it would be a while before The Vivienne would need to pass on the crown.
