After Drag Race UK showed up and showed out, there was a lot of pressure on Season 12 to fix the American seasons’ downward trajectory. And while the cast reveal and split premiere were received warmly enough, one queen’s presence threatened to derail the entire season. That queen was Sherry Pie, who admitted to multiple instances of sexual misconduct and harassment from her time catfishing as a casting agent. The COVID-19 pandemic also kept fans from watching with friends, further imperiling the season. It’s to the show’s credit, then, that Season 12 was as fun, light-hearted, and enjoyable as it was. Though potentially overrated by the fandom thanks to the circumstances, Season 12 nonetheless featured a dynamite top three of Jaida Essence Hall, Gigi Goode, and Crystal Methyd, and hosted one of the most impressive rosters of guest judges in series herstory. Season 12 remains the gold standard for regular seasons produced for VH1.
