It’s safe to say that Down Under‘s first season is not my favorite. Or my 15th favorite. Or anything that could possibly be described as a “favorite.” Truthfully, the absolute audacity it took for Down Under to fail as badly as it did is in some strange way admirable. You had two queens who had to apologize for racist behavior (in the form of tattoos, dolls, blackface, and appropriative performances) before the season even began, plus the only two queens of color out in the first three weeks. The third eliminated early, Art Simone, was brought back without explanation, and pushed all the way to the end. The three Kiwi queens — Anita Wig’lit, Electra Shock, and winner Kita Mean — were the season’s only saving graces.
