Coming off a celebrated and inventive fourth season, Canada’s Drag Race Season 5 aimed to up the ante with even more experimentation. The Golden Beaver came back, with its wooden sibling in tow for a mid-season twist. The Lip Sync Slay-Offs changed to a team format that had some unintended consequences. These and other innovative efforts could be appreciated for their ambition, but it often felt like the cast was trying to keep up with the various curveballs. Some did better than others, with queens like Helena Poison and Minhi Wang consistently avoiding the bottom, while the stresses of the competition led to drama between queens like Makayla Couture, Xana, and Uma Gahd. In the end, it was The Virgo Queen who won out, becoming the fifth inheritor of the Canada’s Next Drag Superstar title.
