The only English language Drag Race installment that doesn’t feature RuPaul as host, Canada’s Drag Race Season 1 felt pretty rudderless without a strong captain at the front of the ship. Season 11 runner-up Brooke Lynn Hytes, model Stacey McKenzie, and actor Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman alternated in the role of host, mentor, and judge, and the result felt chaotic. Bowyer-Chapman got the brunt of the criticism (and, appallingly, enough hate to be bullied off Twitter), but Hytes felt out of place too — only McKenzie earned significant praise. But the contestants more than made up for judging woes, as one of the most likable, interesting ensembles ever cast came together to put on one hell of a show. Eventual finalists Rita Baga and Scarlett BoBo were terrific, but it was children’s show host Priyanka who took home the title.
