With a different ending, All Stars 4 might be near the top of my favorite seasons’ ranking. So much of it worked, from the incredibly competitive cast (of 10, seven felt like real threats to win) to a showcase of some excellent lip syncs. The Rudemption challenge fell a bit flat relative to its high stakes, but the results didn’t change much. The real game-changer was Naomi Smalls’ decision to cut Manila Luzon at the first opportunity, sending out a gigantic threat to win the whole thing. Unfortunately, the choice to cut Naomi and fan favorite Monique Heart before the final lip sync came back to bite the show, as vocal, track record-obsessed fans argued for a Trinity the Tuck win over Monét X Change. In the end, in a hastily edited-together finale, both queens took home crowns, satisfying practically no one. It was a sour final note to an otherwise strong season. (Note for this season, and this season only, my coverage lived across two separate sites: INTO for the first half, and Xtra for the back.)
